Grief and Loss

536702815Loss hurts.

Overnight, everything changed. One moment, your wife was there; the next, she wasn’t. Now, you struggle even to wrap your mind around it.

The immense grief you feel has permeated every aspect of your life. You can’t sleep, food has lost its taste, and all the color in your world has turned to a muted shade of gray.

The future was a source of hope and excitement, but now it feels unknown and frightening.

Everything that once felt solid has become unstable. You’re at the mercy of your raging emotions, and it’s terrifying. You want desperately to find your way out of this storm of grief, but it feels impossible and hopeless.

Finding peace is possible.

What you’re going through is perfectly normal, and there is a way to find peace.

I’ll provide you with the guidance and support to let your grief unfold organically rather than fighting against it.

Using a body-centered approach, I’ll help you manage your emotions; adjust to this new reality; and process your grief physically, mentally, and spiritually.

I take the view that grief is your body’s and mind’s natural response to the loss of someone or something important to you, and in many ways, it resembles the phenomenon of phantom limbs. Your organism expects that person or thing to be there. When you remember or become reminded that they are not there, a conflict arises between the feeling of things and your awareness of the reality of things.

Your body needs space and time to adjust, and your mind needs time to bring its understanding and expectations in line with this new reality to move through the grief you feel.

The emotions we associate with grief are the expression of that process and the body’s way of adjusting to the new reality. Grief becomes problematic when we fight those emotions rather than allowing them to unfold as the body needs them to.

To that end, I help people process their grief by being an empathetic presence, a companion in the sometimes overwhelming emotions that can get too big to navigate alone. I use somatic mindfulness approaches to help you feel the feelings controlled without getting caught in the mental and physical loops that prolong your grief so that your body and mind can let go of the past and get on with your future.
